The Medical Research Council/ Uganda Virus Research Institute (MRC/UVRI) Uganda Research Unit on AIDS based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute, Entebbe invites applications from suitably qualified Ugandans for the position of Senior Data Programmer.
The MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS is a bilateral multi-disciplinary research organisation funded by the Medical Research Council (UK), DFID (UK) and other donor organisations. The work will be based in Entebbe, and is funded by a grant from the IDEA consortium, an African-European Initiative for Dissecting the Interplay between Poverty Related Diseases and Helminth Infections. Appointment will be for one year initially and is renewable subject to the satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Job Summary:

The Senior database programmer is required to work with databases primarily on studies within the Co-Infections Study Programme and will involve developing a Good Clinical Practice (GPC) compliant database for a new clinical trial and also developing data dictionaries for existing databases. The work will involve creating data dictionaries for existing databases and setting up a GCP compliant database for a forthcoming trial to investigate the effect of Schistosoma mansoni infection on the immunogenicity of a candidate TB vaccine. The successful applicant will join a team Statisticians and Data Managers at the MRC Unit in the Uganda Virus Research Institute.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

-The applicant should hold an honours degree in Computer Science, Database programming, Software engineering, Statistics and Computation or a related field
-The applicant should hold a Masters’ degree in Information Systems or related field is desirable
-Experience in the use of Open Clinica or other GCP compliant databases will be advantageous
-Three or more years’ experience in programming using in more than one language (MS-Access VBA, Java or .Net languages)
-At least three years’ experience working with at least one database management system (Ms Access, My SQL or SQL server).
-A year’s experiencing in creating and managing databases in a research environment
-Experience in the programming of electronic data capture using either UMPCs or PDAs

-Assist with preparing and compiling reports on a variety of technical and non-technical topics.
-Coordinate review and approval of subproject documents.
-Assist in tracking the status of program implementation.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

-The applicant should possess a Bachelor’s degree in natural resource related field
-Experience of at least a year to three years relevant with an international development programs
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and organizational skills.
-Relevant computer software skills including Microsoft office products.
-Possess the ability to interact with others and handle problem situations with tact, occasional external contacts.

1. Treasury Management:

-Ensure compliance with all financial and contract reporting requirements for licensing, Audit and regulatory agencies;

6. Reporting:

-Preparation of the various reports including: Management Reports, Cash projection, Aged Debtors Report, Aged Suppliers Report;
-In conjunction with the country manager prepare the annual company budget;
-Ensure that all assets are properly recorded in the asset register and insured;
-Preparation for the annual audit;
-Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time;

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

-The applicant should possess  relevant first degree preferably in commerce or business administration
-At least two years’ experience in similar position in a medium to large commercial environment.
-Professional qualifications: CPA (K) or equivalent.
-Strong leadership skills with the ability to remain focused under pressure circumstances.
-High proficiency in the use of Excel and Word
-Good oral and written communication skills
-Experience in the use of accounting software.
-Experience in an audit firm an added advantage.
