Deputy Project Manager, Head of Department Agriculture at Welthungerhilfe (WHH) in Uganda



Job Title:  Deputy Project Manager, Head of Department Agriculture

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Technically support the Manager to implement projects covering livelihoods, food security, infrastructure rehabilitation, DRR and informal vocational skills development for youth
  • Responsible for the coordination and guidance of the project team in all sectors including the administration/finance and logistic departments
  • In charge of the coordination and liaise the cooperation with District Government Departments and ail other implementing partners (NGOs, institutions)
  • Initiate and conduct skill development for the project team
  • Take lead and manage the establishment and operation of Farmer Field School groups

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture
  • Past exposure and experience of eight years in rural development project implementation, preferably with international organizations
  • Six years proven work experience in Farmer Field School extension approach.
  • Sound theoretical and practical background in concepts related to food security and nutrition
  • Strong project management experience (Planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling), preferably in a leading management position (e.g. project manager)
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and leadership skills
  • Excellent English oral and written ability
  • High degree of capacity to multi task and coordinate diverse activities under pressure in rural remote areas

Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Mobilize farmers groups to undertake commercial agricultural farming practices by  planting high yielding crop and carry out a farmers training in specific crops with tangible disbursement amounts and client numbers.
·         Link the farmers to a market or develop a marketing strategy to benefit the farmers during harvest time.
·         Develop an agricultural Training curriculum and promotional material for least 4 crops; with specific details on planting, spacing, use and application of seed, fertilizer, herbicide, pesticide and post-harvest handling, etc.
·         Set up demonstration gardens on ECLOF farm on identified crops and advise management on topography plans.

Job requirements:

·         A degree in Agriculture plus Post graduate qualification in Agronomy.
·         Qualifications and experience in agronomy especially commercial agriculture, animal, crop husbandry
·         Knowledge of inherent risks associated with specific crops such as sunflower, Maize, beans and horticulture and domestic animals such as cattle, etc.
·         Experience in training commercial farmers in agricultural activities such as planting, spacing, seed variety, post-harvest handling, irrigation, crop insurance, etc.
·         Experience in developing demonstration farms, marketing strategies, seed contracts and long term partnership.
·         Experience in agricultural microfinance and FEW an added advantage.

Job Description:

Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervise and advise farmers on sustainable agronomical practices
Mentor and train direct project beneficiaries
Actively mobilise community for training sessions.
Conduct training for beneficiaries.
Develop good working relationship with churches and key project stakeholders
Ensure exemplary spiritual conduct both during activities implementation and while off duty in the communities with the project area.
Write and submit periodic reports to the project manager.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

The candidate should hold a bachelor’s degree / Diploma in Agriculture, extension, development studies or related fields.
The applicants should be mature, qualified and experienced national staff with a minimum of three years’ experience in Agriculture projects activities.
Possess practical experience in addition e.g. agronomic practices; community work, good report writing and communication skills.
Hands-on experience in Agronomy including kitchen Gardening.
Past experience in crop post-harvest technologies.
Two or more years’ experience in agriculture extension and training of farmers.
The incumbent will be responsible for implementation WRAP activities in the designated project areas.
He/She will support the project in providing technical advisory services to all the refugee farmers to enable them practice modern sustainable crop cultivation to enhance their food security.
S/he will support in implementing project activities in line with the approved work plans and also provide monitoring to assess progress against agreed objectives. S/he should possess a current riding license of class ‘A’ for motorcycles.
Working knowledge of the local language will be an added advantage.
S/he will be based in Kamwenge but should be willing to travel extensively and spend nights in the field.

Computer literacy skills (Microsoft Office)
Able to ride clutch motorcycle with Valid licence

Job Description:

The Albertine Rift REDD Program Manager will be responsible for the development of REDD projects along the Albertine Rift in Uganda, DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania including project design, data collection, technical analysis and drafting project documents, (e.g. PDDs for the voluntary carbon market and ER-PINs for partner countries of the FCPF).

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicants should hold a PhD degree in forestry or conservation biology
  • At least ten years of professional experience in forestry or related fi eld with proven track record in REDD project development, extensive knowledge of voluntary and compliance carbon markets, particularly the FCPF and UN-REDD.
  • Skills in Remote sensing, modeling, fieldwork, statistical analysis skills, project management, and budgeting and planning
  • Proven experience in developing biomass inventories, ground truthing land use classifications and designing and implementing socio-economic surveys Required: Knowledge of current climate change policy globally and in Uganda, and emerging protocols and strategies (e.g. NAPAs, NAMAs, UNFCC, REDD+ emerging safeguards)
  • Past fundraising experience, proposal writing and budget development from government/agency and private sources
  • Significant work experience in Uganda, knowledge of Uganda environmental and conservation political issues
  • Past experience working in multicultural environment of an international NGO is an added advantage
